Why do Americans lose billions to cybercrime?

I’ve worked with small businesses and seen people wire money because an email looked like it came from their boss, and nobody stopped to double-check, part of the problem is that everything is digital and fast now, so slowing down feels unnatural, another issue is that people think cybercrime only targets “other people”, like huge corporations or careless teens, but retirees, freelancers, and regular families get hit constantly, I try to stay aware by reading breakdowns of how scams actually work, not just headlines, and one article I go back to is on Tech Magazine because it explains patterns in plain language, like how social engineering beats technical defenses, how outdated systems and lack of training play a role, and why reporting is low so the real damage is probably even higher, personally I use password managers, two-factor authentication, and I tell everyone around me to pause when something creates pressure or fear, because scammers thrive on emotion, not tech, and I’ve learned that awareness is less about tools and more about mindset, assuming someone is always trying to trick you without becoming paranoid.
