Using FTP using command line in linux machines

Creating an FTP connection

In order to connect to the FTP server, you need to type in the terminal command, FTP and then the domain name of your website “ or IP address of your server.

  • ftp

Note: The above IP we used us just for reference purpose.

Replace the IP address and domain name with your IP and domain name of your server.

Login with your username and password

All the FTP servers logins are password protected, so you need to provide login details to server such as username and password.

If you connect to an anonymous FTP server, then you can use “anonymous as username and don’t use any password:

  • Name: anonymous
  • Password:

The terminal will display a message stating: 230 Login successful.

When you are logged in successfully to FTP.

Using filezilla for ftp sftp

FileZilla is a free to use, and an open source FTP client available on the web for Windows  and Linux. FTP and SFTP both are supported by FileZilla. And can be easily used on all hosting services provided by HostingRaja. You can download it by visiting FileZilla website and install it on your system.

Once you are done with the installation of FileZilla on your system, we can easily create a bookmark for your FTP setting making use of the Site Manager.


  • Hit File from the menu and then Site manager.

  • Hit New Site option and rename the bookmark:

  • Protocol- FTP (FIle Transfer Protocol).

For SFTP, use the following settings:

  • Port- 22

  • Protocol- SFTP -(SSH File Transfer Protocol)

  • At last Enable Passive Mode- Hit transfer Settings and in transfer mode choose passive
